No litter picks in Hoo for a while!

The monthly Hoo Clean Up litter pick is on hold until further notice.

I formed the Hoo Clean Up back in 2012 to highlight the growing litter problem in the centre of Hoo. Sadly, the litter problem still exists.

These days the group is very much a positive social gathering for a small, but enthusiastic, bunch of residents.

Seven years of the Hoo Clean Up

When I formed the Hoo Clean Up community litter picking event back in January 2012 I didn't think it would still be regularly taking place seven years later.

A team of Hoo residents last month marked the seventh anniversary of the Hoo Clean Up at the group's first litter pick of 2019. The volunteers were joined by a group of enthusiastic beavers (and cubs and scouts) from 50th Medway Towns (Hoo) Scout Group (all pictured below).

The Hoo Clean Up wasn't formed to provide a litter picking service, or to highlight any failing in service by Medway Council (or its contractors). It was formed to highlight a growing problem of residents (of all ages) who needlessly drop litter.

I am pleased to say that I have attended all but two or three events since January 2012.

If you would like to take part - the volunteers in Hoo meet on the last Saturday of every month (except in April and December) at 9.30am, outside Hoo Library (Church Street, Hoo , ME3 9AL). The session is followed by free refreshments (sponsored by the Village Voices Community Magazine) back at Hoo Library.

Hoo Clean Up on Saturday 24 May 2014

If you can spare a couple of hours on Saturday 24 May, from 9.30am, join the Hoo Clean Up!

Meeting outside Hoo Library (Church Street, Hoo), the monthly litter picking session is always a great opportunity to meet up and chat with other villagers.

After the session, everyone goes back to the library for free tea, coffee and nibbles, as generously supplied by Spar Supermarket.

See you there!

The first Hoo Clean Up of 2014

It was good to join the first Hoo village litter pick of the year, last Saturday (25 January). It was great to see 20 local residents turning up to help!

The Hoo Clean Up meets every month (usually the last Saturday of the month) and the new meeting point is Hoo Library (Church Street, Hoo). Many thanks to the staff at the library for all their help and assistance with organising the refreshments after the session. Special thanks to SPAR supermarket for supplying all the cakes and nibbles (for free).

The next opportunity to get involved is on Saturday 22 February, meeting at 9.30am outside Hoo Library.

See you there!

The first Hoo Clean Up of 2014

The next Hoo Clean Up event will be on Saturday 25 January, meeting outside Hoo Library (Church Street) at 9.30am.

As well as being the first litter pick of 2014, those attending the event will celebrate the second anniversary of the Hoo Clean Up group. The first ever event was held in January 2012 (pictured below).

Well done to all of those who have given up their time every month to help make the village ‘litter free’, albeit for a little time each month. Such a great effort all round!

The last Clean Up session of 2013 (held on Saturday 30 November) was the most well attended event to date (pictured below).

See you on Saturday 25 January!

Big turnout for the Hoo Clean Up!

The April Hoo Clean Up (pictured below on the May event poster) was possibly the most well attended session to date.

20 local residents came along to help collect litter from the village square, the car parks behind Co-Op and Spar supermarkets, Church Street and parts of Main Road, Stoke Road, Vicarage Lane and Bells Lane.

Another fantastic effort from the volunteers, finished off with refreshments and some tasty nibbles back at Taggs Coffee Shop.

Having attended every Clean Up event since they were created in January 2012, it was especially nice on this occasion to welcome along a few new faces. The next opportunity to get involved will be on Saturday 25 May at 9.30am. The meeting point will again be Taggs (Church Street, Hoo).

The Hoo Clean Ups are supported by Village Voices (the community magazine for Hoo and Chattenden), MHS Homes and the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. No funding is received (or sought) from Medway Council or Hoo Parish Council.

If you’d like to find out more about the Hoo Clean Ups, get in touch with Michael Pearce (Clean Up Co-Ordinator) on 07919 693095 or send an email here.

Snow bother for Hoo Clean Up!

The February Hoo Clean Up took place this morning, despite the odd heavy snow shower (as can be seen from the photo below).

18 people and 2 dogs came along to help and 12 bags of rubbish were collected - a brilliant effort!

As well as clearing litter from around Hoo Village Square - volunteers also tackled mess left in the car parks behind the Co-Op and Spar supermarkets. Attention was also given to parts of Bells Lane, Main Road, Church Street and Stoke Road.

After today's session - everyone enjoyed some tasty cake and sandwiches at Taggs Coffee Shop.

Pride in Medway, and pride in the Hoo Peninsula!

It’s really great to see two local groups nominated for Pride in Medway awards this year. And, both have been nominated within the ‘Green Champion’ category.

Well done to the Hoo Clean Up volunteers, who litter pick in Hoo every month, and to the Friends of Grain Coastal Park, who have carried out many environmental improvements at Grain Coastal Park.

I know both groups very well, and they deserve recognition for the excellent work they undertake on behalf of their communities.

The next Hoo Clean Up will take place on Saturday 23 February. If you’d like to get involved - they will meet at 9.30am in Hoo Village Square (the raised platform area). The Hoo Clean Ups are usually held on the last Saturday of each month. More information can be obtained by phoning the Clean Up Co-Ordinator Michael Pearce on 07919 693 095.

The Friends of Grain Coastal Park usually meet on the third Sunday of the month, at 10am, and they set out from St. James Pavilion, Pintail Close, Isle of Grain, ME3 0DW. To find out more about what they’re up to, get in touch by sending an email here.

Good luck to the Hoo Clean Up volunteers and the Friends of Grain Coastal Park - hopefully you'll get through to the final stage of the Pride in Medway awards!
